Quick Recommendations for Driving in Costa Rica
- Choose 4×4 if you plan to visit mountains, unpaved roads, or beaches in the rainy season (May–Nov).
- Use Waze/Google Maps for real-time traffic and road closures; signal can drop in rural areas—download offline maps.
- Tolls (peajes) on Route 27 and others: carry some cash or ask us about electronic toll options.
- Parking: prefer guarded lots in San José and beach towns; avoid leaving valuables in the car.
- Speed limits are strictly enforced; watch for school zones and speed bumps (retornos & “muertos”).

Which car type should I choose for Costa Rica?
For San José and highways, a compact or midsize sedan is perfect. If you’ll visit mountains, waterfalls, or remote beaches—especially in the rainy season—a SUV/4×4 is strongly recommended for clearance and traction.
Do I really need a 4×4?
If your plan includes Monteverde, La Fortuna backroads, Nicoya Peninsula beach access, or Osa Peninsula, a 4×4 makes the trip safer and more comfortable. For city-only trips, a sedan is sufficient.
What insurance options are available?
We offer required liability plus optional coverages (e.g., CDW/LDW, theft, glass & tires). We’ll show each option with limits and deductibles before you pay so you can choose the protection that fits your trip.
Are tolls included in the price?
Tolls are not included. You can pay cash at booths or ask us about an electronic pass. We’ll mark the main toll roads on your route when you pick up the car.
Is GPS or mobile signal reliable?
In cities and main highways, yes. Rural areas may have limited coverage. Download offline maps and share your itinerary with our team—we’ll suggest the best route and fuel stops.
Do you provide child seats and extras?
Yes. Child seats, additional drivers, Wi-Fi hotspot, and roof racks are available on request. Add them during booking so we can reserve them in advance.
How does the fuel policy work?
Most rentals are full-to-full: you receive the car full and return it full. Keep the last gas receipt; if you prefer, we can handle refueling for a service fee.
Where can I pick up and return the car?
Airport meet & greet, agency office, or hotel delivery (subject to availability). One-way returns between cities can be arranged—ask for the fee and schedule.
What documents do I need?
A valid driver’s license (international permit recommended if your license is not in Roman alphabet), passport, and credit card for the security deposit.
